TAMPA, Fla. (Mar. 24, 2014) – Adventure Island CEO Sidney Evans will hold a conference scheduled this Monday March 30th at 2 p.m. to respond to an incident of an ‘suspected’ illness breakout that may have occurred at the theme park this week.
(FOR PROFESSOR ONLY – BACKGROUND INFO)
Scenario setup for PR team to organize:
Keep in mind that we want to keep this environment as positive as can be – we want public interest but to ideally change the scenario around from a negative to a positive.
The press conference will be located out the front of the main café (surf side café) for visual footage and scenery. The media will be greeted with a luncheon, to make them feel welcomed.
At the conference not only will the CEO be there to answer all questions, but the vice-president of Busch Gardens/Adventure Islands medical team will be at the conference able to answer questions about the speculated salmonella infection.
The medical team will:
-
Acknowledge the symptoms of the infection
-
Inform audience/ public ways and ideas of how to prevent the infection to spreading
-
Show audience that the team is professional, and care about the public’s safety and health.
Strategic Planning for news conference:
Goal: To address the public and medias assumptions about the crisis spreading and putting theme park guests at risk.
Objective: Hold a news conference to generate POSITIVE media coverage on a NEGATIVE situation that could potentially ruin the theme parks reputation; get 100 percent of local media and generate coverage.
TALKING POINTS:
CEO Talking points (run through setting/location before conference):
-Sincere apology for what has happened at the park putting public at risk
-Guests and staff are number one priority especially their health and safety
-Outline what happened, and address the speculation that 10 guests where reported found sick from eating at the parks restaurant and 3 guests where hospitalized from salmonella but cannot confirm that it was because of the park.
-Investigation is underway looking deeply into eruption/spread of crisis.
-Future safety and supportive procedure videos will be uploaded onto parks website including informative tutorials about hazards, safety and health.
Key Message #1:
The safety and concern of guests and staff members at Adventure Island is our number one priority. We apologise for the risks we have put all guests through. The guests who fell ill are undertaking treatment and are in safe hands.
We cannot speculate what happened; but we have put together a team to examine and investigate all areas around the park inspecting restaurant facilities and the pool/park area.
-
Recognized by the courts of health/hygiene law and government regulators as the standards of the theme parks industry.
-
The park is shut down and hygiene protocols and procedures will be undertaken throughout all areas of the park including the pools, and restaurants. (This is bringing awareness to the public that the committee and board members are doing something about the crisis)
Key Message #2:
It appears all food safety protocols were followed, but in an abundance of caution, the board will organize further training procedures for all employees that work in the restaurants to undertake programs that will educate them greater about food prep and safety.
*Also state that the restaurants get health, hygiene and safety checks on regular basis… state how often they are checked.
Medical Team talking points:
-Informative information about salmonella include;
*Symptoms
*Cause is towards the infection
*State whether it can spread that quickly and rapidly amongst others or not
-Outline protocols the medical team would have endeared if they where actually called upon (which states they where not).
Key Message #3:
Inform audience that an investigation is under way.
